Q&A with the Jericho Creative Team
(May 9, 2007)
Wanted to start off by thanking everyone on here for their great questions this season. As we said over on the Jericho message boards as well, it's been a blast for us here at CBS.com as well as for our Producers. You've provided many penetrating and probing questions and there are some very astute observers here in the Jericho community. So thanks to all who are part of the Jericho wiki community for all of your excitement and inquisitiveness (if that is an actual word).
So let's get to it- here are this week's responses to your questions and we hopeyou enjoy tonight's season finale.
Question:
WHAT WAS THE NAME OF THE SONG AND ARTIST AT THE END OF THE 21ST EPISODE WHERE NEW BERN BOMBS JERICHO? GREAT SONG!!!
Producer's Response:
That was an acoustic non-album version of “Times Like These,” by Foo Fighters.
Question:
Is the town Rogue River related to the Book The Postman
Rogue River is prominent in the book "The Postman" though as an actual river and surrounding area it Oregon. A town by this name was featured in an episode. Was this name used to conjure up similarities between the two? Are there any other similarities or ties to "The Postman?"
Producer's Response:
Interesting catch, thought the name Rogue River was not intended to be a reference to “The Postman.” The writers of the episode, Matt Federman and Steve Scaia, started from scratch. They wanted a cool, iconic compound name combining a geographic word with a spooky descriptor. After many tries, they landed on “Rogue Ridge,” though felt it sounded a bit too “Bonanza.” Hence, “Rogue River.”

Question:
is indianapolis gone or was it spared?
Producer's Response:
Unfortunately, the home of our returning Super Bowl champions appears to have been successfully targeted.
Question:
What is the significance of Junction 97 in the credits?
Producer's Response:
The “JCT 97” emblem is the title card for Junction Entertainment, the production shingle of our executive producer, Jon Turteltaub. “Junction” is a play on the acronym JCT, which are Jon’s initials. ’97 is the year the company was founded.

Question:
What is the salt used for ? food, or anything else?
I never understand what the salt is used for?
Producer's Response:
Johnston Green extols the virtues and value of salt in episode 13, “Black
Jack.” You can re-watch it on Innertube anytime.
Salt has more applications than virtually any other mineral. Besides being a dietary necessity, salt can be used as a preservative, an antiseptic, a dentifrice, a cleanser, an abrasive, a fire-retardant, a defroster and a deodorizer. The list goes on and on.
Question:
Hawkins and Jake
Are Hawkins and Jake going to be working together outside of Jericho in future episodes? Is the fact that many of the "bad" guys are bald of any importance to the story line? Is Columbus, Ohio going to be a part of the story line in future shows? Are there really 6 different Presidential districts or is this just war time rumor?
Producer's Response:
Hell yes. No. Very much so. Stay tuned.

One Mans Terrorist episode
Anonymous Monday, 2:37 AM EDT the warehouse the same man who interviewed Jake for the Pilot's job with a security firm in earlier episodes?
Producer's Response:
Sorry, different guys.
Question:
Future of Show
Is episode 23 the season finale, or the series finale?
Producer's Response:
Episode 22, entitled “Why We Fight,” is most definitely not a series finale! In fact, by the time it’s over, you’ll have some great clues about where our story is headed in its second season.

Question:
Salt of the Earth
Will the significance of Jericho's salt mine be explored more this season, or will we have to wait till next season.
Answer:
Remember what Dale told Skylar after returning from the Black Jack? Salt is in high-demand in the post-bomb world. The Anderson-Stevens Salt Mine is one of Jericho’s biggest assets, and it plays a very important role in our upcoming episodes. Starting in episode 19, “Casus Belli,” you’ll start to see what we mean.
Question:
DVD
When will Season 1 be available on DVD.
Answer:
A lot of you have asked about the DVDs for Season One, which are definitely in the works. We’ll be sure to forward on details about the release date and special features as the season reaches its end.

Question:
Like I said above: this is a stupid question. It's like asking for a story spoiler. But couldn't you just give us a hint about Dale? A clue whether or not he's gonna get his act together, or whether he's going to become some creep worse than Sean? (if that's posssible)
Producer's Response:
Inepisode 17,"One Man¹s Terrorist," we saw Dale exploit a crisis in town by recruitingrefugees to be muscle for his growing operation. In episode 19, entitled "Casus Belli," Dale and Skylar will contemplate a dangerous step when their ambitions bring them into direct conflict with Gray Anderson.
Question:
Will we ever find anything about MiGs from "Red Flag" ?
Some suspect they might have been flown by US pilots out of Groom Lake (Area 51) where the US fleet of Cold War MiGs known as the "Red Hat Squadron" are based. The writers could argue
this since that base is so secretive - you cant really call up Area 51 and ask...
Producer's Response:
Interesting guess on the origin of the MiGs. The MiGs are an important clue; you¹re wise to keep them in the back of your mind. How they ended up in the skies over Jericho connects to the origin of our story in a very direct way.

Question:
No episode on Wednesday, March 21st OK Producers, why was Survivor shown in place of Jericho last night? And please don't tell me the show is cancelled.
Producer's Response:
March Madness threw a wrench into CBS’ Thursday and Friday night programming, hence “Survivor” instead of “Jericho” last Wednesday. The goods news is we can now look forward to seven straight weeks of new “Jericho” episodes (starting with episode 16, “Winter's End”), all the way through to our season finale. Spread the word.
Question:
Insider Commentary When will there be another "Insider Commentary" posted? I find these 'episodes' very enlightenng and enjoyable! I'd love one done on Heart of Winter.
Producer's Response:
You’ll be happy to know we’ll soon be recording Insider Commentaries for episode 13, “Black Jack” featuring writer/producer Dan Shotz and writer/co-creator Jonathan E. Steinberg, as well as for episode 16, “Winter's End” featuring producer Karim Zreik and writer/producer Frank Military. Look for them to go online in the next few weeks.
(March 21, 2007)
Question:
Are you going to break up Stanley and Mimi? If you do that, you'll be loosing at least one Jericho fanatic. If you guys kill off Stanley, then I'm not watching the show anymore! In "Red Flag" and "Heart Of Winter" I was freaked out because I thought he was going to die! ("Red Flag" and "Heart of Winter" were both GREAT epsiodes; it's always fun when a favorite character gets in trouble, as long as he doesn't die. Two very nice, gripping episodes.) Are you going to kill off my favorite character or break up his relationship?! Please say no. PLEASE!
Producer's Response:
We can only assume you are anxious about next week’s episode “Winter’s End.” Don’t want to spoil anything, though you should prepare for some major upheaval in Stanley’s situation in the coming weeks.
Question:
What's going to happen with Emily and Roger? Will Jake and Emily ever happen? And what is to come with Jake and Heather?
Producer's Response: Look for things in the “love square” to reach a boil in episode 17, “One Man’s Terrorist,” when Emily will face an impossible decision.

Question:
Doctor brought back by Jake & Eric from Rogue River
Where is he and why isn't he helping April with the clinic.
Answer:
Kenchy returns to the show in episode 16, “Winter’s End.” It’s true, he hasn’t been helping, and in the episode you’ll find out why.
Question:
Jake and Hawkins?
It's been several episodes since we've seen Jake and Hawkins in a scene together. The town hall meeting doesn't count, they didn't speak to each other :-) Will there be more episodes where these 2 lead characters really get to know each other and work together?
Answer:
Episode 18, entitled “A.K.A.” brings Jake and Hawkins together in a big way. Can’t tell you much more than that, except by the end of the episode, nothing will be the same for either of them ever again.

Question:
Emily Would we see Emily role with more action? She would be a great kick ass girl!
Answer:
We don’t want to step on any of the surprises in the final episodes of our season, but fans of Emily can expect to see more of her adventurous side in the coming weeks.
Question:
Tank Watch Was the tank used in the promotional images for 1.15 Semper Fidelis a prop, a real tank, or an older tank made to look like a modern tank?
Answer:
The tank is a real, working British Chieftain standing in for an M-1 Abrams.

whats going on in the rest of the united states? Anonymous Wednesday, 8:02 PM EST Watch i been watching your show since it started, and i have to say if you spend as much time on whats going on in other citys maybe a episode of what it looked like as the bomb went off in one of these citys you know "realy bring it home for the people so they can see what we face for real now
Producer's Response:
Our show is about a single town, so we won’t leave that perspective except when we’re following one of our principal characters. But for those of you hungry for some news on the world outside Jericho, keep your Tivo remote handy when you watch tonight’s episode, “Black Jack.” The fairgrounds has an information center where news and rumors about the rest of the country are collected.
Question:
Jericho at PlayeFest '07 Come meet the cast and creators of "Jericho" as part of the Museum of Television and Radio's PaleyFest. The cast and creators will be on hand Tuesday, March 13th to watch an episode with you and take your questions. For tickets, or more information, go to http://www.ticketmaster.com/artist/1101264.
Producer's Response:
Good reminder to any “Jericho” fans living in the Los Angeles area, tickets are still on sale for the Jericho panel at the MTR Paley Festival, where you can ask questions in person to our cast and producers. Here’s who will be there: Executive producer Carol Barbee, co-creators Jon Steinberg, Josh Schaer and Steve Chbosky; and stars Skeet Ulrich, Gerald McRaney, Pamela Reed, Lennie James, Ashley Scott, and Erik Knudsen.

Survival of the Government Given that Washington D.C. was hit in the initial attacks during a special speech given by the president with most government officials in attendance, had the federal government been destroyed? If so who would have taken over after such a loss in government power?
Producer's Response:
Watch episode 13, “Black Jack” for news on the state of the federal government. That news, plus the completed morse code message at the beginning of tonight’s episode, “The Day Before,” add up to an important clue about the future direction of the series.
Question: Is Hawkins with us or against us? Because he was cementing what looked like a warhead in to his wall. Is it aneather bomb?
Producer's Response:
Tonight’s episode “The Day Before” will answer one of those questions. Beyond that, look for Hawkins’ past to explode onto “Jericho” in the coming weeks. If you’re a fan of Lennie James and this character, you will not be disappointed.

Richmond? If Sara was driving to Richmond, Virginia from Washington DC when the blasts occurred, how did she have an accident near St. Louis, Missouri right after the blasts? She was helped from her car by an "unidentified" man.
Question:
Mystery Woman Says here that she was/is a cop from st louis, didn't Hawkins intially say he was a cop.. from st louis?
Producer's Response to Both Questions:
The similarity between the mystery woman’s and Hawkins’ occupations as St. Louis police officers is no coincidence. As for the different story she tells in the video Q & A, just know there are many layers to this character, stories behind stories. Hope you’ve enjoyed all the teasing about who she is and her connection to Jericho. The good news is you won’t have to wait much longer for the answer. Be sure to watch our spring premiere “The Day Before,” next Wednesday, February 21st.

Question:
The EMP Yesterday, 10:23 PM EST Hi! Just want to ask something that has been bothering me for some time now: Are the missiles that are launched in Federal Response responsible for the EMP that strikes in 9:02?
Producer's Response:
Producer's Response:
No, although that’s a reasonable assumption. We can’t tell you too much about the specific cause of the EMP, because it connects to our larger mythology which we’ll be detailing more and more down the road. Just know the missiles you saw in “Federal Response” hit their intended targets.
Question:
cars What can someone tell me what type of car jake is driving??????????? because i am clueless
Producer's Response:
Producer's Response:
Jake drives a ’69 Plymouth Roadrunner, all stock except for a set of headers. 383 horsepower engine. 4 belt carburetor. Dual exhaust. Bucket seats, with a console shifter.

Question:
Please No Arab & Muslim Bashing Tuesday, 1:45 AM EST Watch Arabs and Muslims already feel they are under siege in this country. I hope your storyline is not going to lead to more Islamaphobia. How predictible and sad for innocent citizens if that were the case, not to mention unoriginal. Anyway, aren't the perps of the attack beside the point as I get your meaning so far?
Producer's Response:
Producer's Response:
In our minds, the perpetrators of the attacks are in no way beside the point. How and why these bombs went off will ultimately factor into our story in a very direct way. That said, your point is well taken. We want to use this story to reveal truths about our world, rather than exploit fears or reinforce stereotypes.

Question:
Multi-season Plot Planning? Anonymous Friday, 1:26 PM EST Watch Thank you for such a fantastic show, and for offering this forum to answer questions about it. How much long-term plot planning do you do? I have always wondered this about shows like Jericho and Alias which feature large, multi-season story arcs. I am assuming that you have a general idea, at least, of where the plot is going for the rest of the season. What about over the course of several seasons? Or is it more common to take the overall story arc one or two seasons at a time, and allow it to evolve? For example, do you have an idea now of how things will end up in the series finale (perish the thought, of course!)? Obviously, I don't expect (or want) you to give anything away. :)
Producer's Response:
Producer's Response:
Our very first conversation in the “Jericho” writers’ room focused on where we want the story to end, over the course of several seasons. From there, we talked about where we want the show to go by the end of the first season. Our answers to those questions have evolved, but the core ideas are holding strong, and presently we’ve begun talking about the content of the second season.
Question:
(January 24th, 2007)
Bringing back characters.... first off i would like to say that you guys have made one outstanding show but i am wondering if you plan on bringing back any other major characters? say jonahs and i might have missed it but what ever happened to the people that were in jonahs gang? they seemed to disappear. thanks for your time.
Producer's Response:
Producer's Response:
As a general rule, unless you see a character die, don’t count them out. We’ve got plenty of surprises in store for you in the coming season.

Question:
Participation from outside sources?
What organizations does your creative team get its info from? Have you or do you plan to ask for participation of any kind from say the CDC, the government, military or contractors like Blackwater?
Producer's Response:
What organizations does your creative team get its info from? Have you or do you plan to ask for participation of any kind from say the CDC, the government, military or contractors like Blackwater?
Producer's Response:
We have had very helpful discussions with a wide variety of experts, including university scientists, officials at Homeland Security and the CDC, private security contractors, and historians from the Nevada Nuclear Test Site.

Question:
The song from the end of the second episode (Fallout)
Can you please tell me what's the name of the song from the end of the second episode?
Producer's Response:
Can you please tell me what's the name of the song from the end of the second episode?
Producer's Response:
The music playing over the “push-pins” sequence is an original piece entitled “Hold On,” written and performed by David Lawrence, our composer, and Jon Turteltaub, our executive producer/director.
Question:
Question:
InfluencesI saw the 1983 movie Testament. It was stunning. Jericho evokes that same small town, this is how this is affecting me point of view. Were you influenced by Testatment?
Producer's Response:
Producer's Response:
“Jericho” is not based on any kind of source material, though we’re all fans of the post-apocalyptic genre. If you’re interested in other titles with a similar theme, we recommend “Testament,” also “The Day After,” and a British movie called “Threads” which is highly disturbing. On the book front, check out Nevil Shute’s “On the Beach” and Cormac McCarthy’s “The Road.” Also the Vertigo comic “Y: The Last Man” is an excellent take on the subject.

Question:
(January 10th, 2007)
Question:
Do you plan for Jericho to run as long as it can or is its run pre-destined ala Babylon 5?
Producer's Response:
Producer's Response:
“Jericho” is an on-going series, with a full 22 episode commitment for this year. We’ve worked out really exciting concepts for where the show can go in the second season and beyond. We feel like we could tell these stories for a very long time. As long as you keep watching, we’ll deliver.
Question:
Question:
April Green - Why doesn't she have a more fleshed-out story line? Great character, believable acting skills, beautiful red hair... what gives?
Producer's Response:
Producer's Response:
Often times on an ensemble show like “Jericho,” characters won’t get the attention they deserve early on because there are so many, all of whom need establishing. Now that we are deeper in the season, however, we can afford to write episodes that focus on specific characters. April is a perfect example. She’s at the center of the upcoming episode 16, entitled “Winter’s End.”
Question:
(January 3rd, 2007)
Question:
I'm a huge fan of the post-apocalyptic movies and books, all thanks to a PC game series entitled "Fallout" (and I'm sure there are a lot of fans of these games watching "Jericho"). Has any of you played the game? If so, can we count on some (even subtle) references to these games?
Producer's Response:
Producer's Response:
We love "Fallout." Tim Cain is a genius. Look for our answer to The Hub in episode 13, entitled "Black Jack." You can watch a short preview for that episode on Innertube right now. Also, the rabbit is reduced to a thin red paste.
Question:
Question:
How long will it be until we know the full extent of Hawkins and Jake's relationship and past?
Producer's Response
Producer's Response
Episode 12, entitled "The Day Before," kicks off our spring season. It takes place, as the title suggests, before the events of the pilot. Look to get big chunks of Hawkins and Jake back story there. In Episode 14, entitled "Heart of Winter," Jake reveals something about his past that he's been keeping from everyone in Jericho, and for good reason (go back and watch "Rogue River" again for a hint at what it is).
Question:from: gamechamp85
Dale and Skylar became friends way too fast. I get the feeling that they use to be friends, but social groups and pressure made it so they couldnt be freinds anymore. I wonder if they will become something more though.
Producer's response:
We’re happy to tell you that Dale and Skylar’s relationship does develop in some pretty cool and hopefully unexpected ways. Together they’ll discover they have a lot more influence in town then they’d previously realized. Watch episode 13, “Black Jack,” for a hint at why.
Question:
from: FALLOUT4
It's been weeks since the bombs detonated. Food supplies and fuel are not that plentiful with supposedly 5000 people around Jericho. Why are we not seeing more things like people hunting deer, catching fish with gillnets, smoking and salting meats and fish for long term storage, harvesting the corn, candle making, putting up supplies for winter, etc?
Producer's response:
As winter descends, the town’s supplies of food and resources will be stretched to the limit. Don’t miss episode 14, entitled “Heart of Winter.” Jake and co. make a startling discovery that explains why the populations of game animals around town have shriveled to almost nothing.
Question:
why didnt the first bombs EMP fry everyones electric circuits??? hmmmmmmmm???????seems to me a nuclear blast in Denver would have done it to Jericho
Producer's response:
We have talked to several experts about electromagnetic pulses (EMP). While it was hard to get a consensus on how damaging the effects would be, one thing they agreed on is that the EMP from a nuclear device detonated on the ground would be minimal, compared to an explosion in the ionosphere which would have a much more far-reaching effect.
Question:
The actor that plays Roger... In the finale, we saw Roger returning to Jericho. Is the actor that we saw on that episode Patrick Fabian with a long beard? A steak dinner is riding on the answer. Thanks for your time.
Producer's response:
Roger is played by Christopher Wiehl. Christopher is a very talented actor, who has been a regular on many shows including CSI and Love Monkey for CBS as well as Playmakers for ESPN. Sorry if you lost the bet.
Question:
too much soap
Posted on Monday, 8:34 PM EST by Anonymous Dec 4, 5:38 PM EST
Watch alot of people, me included, feel there is too much soap and not enough common sense storyline in Jericho. we want to see more on how the people are managing to survive, what efforts they are putting into learning about the rest of the country/world, etc... We could not care less who is having an affair with whom.
Producer's response:
We strive to make all the stories on “Jericho” connect back to the attacks and the conditions they have wrought, and that includes stories about our character’s personal lives. In our minds, Eric’s decision to leave April for Mary is equally as premisy (not a real word, we know) as the problem of dwindling resources or lack of communication, because it’s a dramatic change that might never have occurred if it weren’t for the desolation and horror that Eric confronted in Rogue River, which is a direct result of the bombs, etc. It’s exciting to read your comments and think about what we’ve got in the pipeline for the second half of the season. The stories focus very specifically on the challenges of survival in a post-bomb world—winter descends, and we have a run of shows dealing with its devastating effects. The town’s dwindling resources become central to the big plot developments leading into the end of the season, which stands to be quite awesome.
Question:
what is the show based on?

i read a book some time ago call ALAS BABYLON by Pat Frank. is this show based on that book

Producer's Response:
“Jericho” is not based on “Alas, Babylon,” though a lot of us on the writing staff have read the book and are huge admirers of it. We love the breadth of detail Frank brings to the story, as well as his focus on the characters and their relationships. It’s the same balance we strive to make.

I'm looking for anything postive, any link, any petition, anything that will help me to get this show back for a third season!
I loved the first season, was content to get a second season though it was hacked to pieces and rushed and lost a lot of content. Now, I want to know who to contact, what to do and what is the status of this show. The first season drew me in with the warm characters, the real, down to earth people who worked together and survived that first difficult winter and defended themselves against the siege from another town. That is the quality I want in a season three! Please respond Producers and let me know what I can do to get a third season with the same quality of the first and I'm on it pronto!

Greetings to the producers of Jericho!
I have a question, where is the show actually filmed, Texas? What part? I love your town, I would like to see a little more of it though. Maybe add a library if there is one. Would you be willing to add more "folks" to the town, say a Librarian who might be challenged with the books people are reading. Maybe do an episode on censorship or something like that. Need a woman who might want to challenge Major Beck on this issue. See a more personal side to the Cheyenne men. I am a knitter and want to send some small homey items to the cast and to the producers (potholders, wash cloths, scarves, etc) Any idea how I can do that. I want to show my solidarity like as was done with the NUTS. Would it not be cool to see everyone with one of my potholders, or scarves. And no, I don't cash for this or real recognition. Just want to SHOW support! Oh, one more thing......WELCOME BACK TO ALL OF YOU!! WE MISSED YOU! Robin Goldman (fan from the start)

In episode 11 Vox Populi, we see Gray Anderson lead a team to Emily Sullivan's home in order to apprehend Jonah. The truck they are riding in is a 2006 Chevy Silverado 3500. This is a modern vehicle, one that uses several onboard computers in order to run. Now, how is it possible that this truck can even start after the EMP, let alone drive?
